  • How do I register for the festival?
You can either come into the store and pay the registration fee or do it all by phone by calling 727-834-8856. You will also need to sign the photo/video release form. You can either do that in store if you register there or we can send it to your email.
  • I'm confused about how many videos I'm allowed to submit?
Every student is allowed to submit 3 videos for each leson they are enrolled in. (Example: If you are taking, voice, guitar and saxophone, you would be allowed to submit 9 total songs- 3 for each type of lesson)
  • Do I need to submit 3 songs?
No. You only have to submit one song, but more videos gives you more chances to win a prize!
  • I am not good at taking videos of myself. Can I get help with the video?
We encourage students to get help from their teacher, Parents, siblings, other family or friends. If you are taking lessons in the store, bring a phone and tell your teacher that you would like them to video you for your festival entry and they will be happy to help!
  • How long does my video need to be?
Videos need to be at least 1 minute in length and a maximum of 4 minutes. If your song is less than 1 minute long, students playing an instrument should play the song a second time in a different octave and if they are singing, they should repeat a chorus to add length.
  • My song goes over 4 minutes. Will my video be disqualified if I submit a song longer than 4 minutes?
No student will be disqualified over a video that is too long, however, we will need to cut a portion of your video down to 4 minutes and we will do this at no extra charge. We know that students don't want their song to be cut so we will keep the best parts of your performance when we edit!
  • What are the categories in the festival?
Student videos will be arranged into the following categories: Solo -Vocal, Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Strings Duet (Two or more performers)-Vocal, Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Strings Group Performance (Three or more performers)-Vocal, Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Strings Original Song -Students can enter singing, playing or singing & playing an original song, but it must be 100% written with their own original lyrics & music or performed a'Capella with original lyrics if original music is not written
  • Can I enter a category different from what I'm taking in lessons?
Your category must match the type of lesson you are taking at Music Matters. If you are a singer who wants to add an instrument while singing, that is allowed. If you play an instrument in lessons and want to add singing, that is also allowed. If you enter a duet or group performance, members in your group can be playing other instruments or singing and doing something different as long as you are showing what you have learned in lessons.
  • Can I enter playing something that I taught myself?
Yes, as long as it represents the type of lessons you are taking. For example, if you are taking piano lessons and you taught yourself how to play a popular song on the radio, you can enter with that song.
  • What is the cost to enter the festival?
The cost to enter the festival is $25. All students will receive a tote bag and star trophy that say Music Matters Summer Festival 2020, a magnetic picture frame, certificate signed by their teacher and a star lollopop. The fee also will go towards editing, a portion of registration fees go to your teacher for their help in preparing their students and to cover the cost of prizes that we are giving away.
  • Will there be an in-person recital this year?
Due to safety issues surrounding Covid-19, there will not be an in-person recital this year. This festival replaces our May recital, which we were unable to host for the first time in 13 years. Music Matters knows the importance of live performance for students so we created this event to motivate students to practice and work hard to achieve a goal of making the best video of themselves performing because we know this will help students grow and accelerate their learning. Studies show that students who participate in recitals are more advanced than those who do not.
